How the 48-team World Cup works

The expanded format means 104 matches across 16 host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The top two from each of the 12 groups advance, along with the eight best third-placed teams.
That sets up a Round of 32 for the first time in World Cup history before the bracket narrows toward the final on July 19.
